Module I for Parents: Foundations of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)
This module introduces parents to Augmentative and Alternative Communication, the different ways a child can communicate beyond speech. It explains key concepts in simple language and challenges five common myths. The main one is that AAC stops speech development, when research shows it supports it. Parents learn how to be good communication partners: modelling, waiting, prompting gently, noticing every attempt and accepting their child’s way of communicating. The module also explains how to make a communication tool work at home, with motivating words available all day. It ends with practical tips, a self-check checklist and a short task for home.
