This module gives teachers a solid foundation in Augmentative and Alternative Communication. It explains the key concepts, the role of the AAC user and the communication partner, and uses research evidence to challenge five common myths. Research shows that AAC supports speech rather than blocking it. Teachers learn the skills of an effective communication partner: modelling, using prompts from the least to the most support, avoiding too many questions and responding to every attempt. The module also covers observing communication in four key areas. It ends with the conditions that make a communication tool work: access all day, personal vocabulary and a variety of functions and words.
