Module II for Teachers: AAC Communication Systems and Tools
This module gives teachers a practical overview of the main AAC systems and tools. It presents five communication systems: Blissymbolics, sign language, PECS with its step-by-step phases, Braille and Makaton. It then covers aids at three levels. Low-tech aids are symbol sets such as PCS, MÓWik, Makaton, PIC and ARASAAC. Mid-tech aids include BIGmack, Step by Step and GoTalk. High-tech aids are programs and apps such as Boardmaker, Grid 3, LetMeTalk and Cboard. Teachers learn to build communication books using a vocabulary interview questionnaire, organise symbols with the Fitzgerald colour key, and keep symbol positions fixed to support motor memory.
